Symposium Comments

Angela Buchdahl, Brent Walker, Yasir Qadhi guided us through an important conversation about religious freedom in the United States and helped us toward a nuanced understanding of toleration, faith and community. This sort of candid, far-ranging discourse is very much in keeping with what we are building at the Hutchins Center. We were delighted to serve as co-sponsor for this event, and I thank you for providing us with another opportunity for a vibrant collaboration.

I found this event to be wonderful: informative and entertaining, with all presentations made by charming and clever speakers. Furthermore, the evening’s events were extremely collegial and refreshingly open to interesting conversations. I look forward to attending future symposiums.

The Loeb Religious Freedom Symposium was a great event to close out my year of fellowship. Beyond its superb organization and execution, its invited speakers and moderator had a riveting discussion on Religious Freedom, balancing theological and legal perspectives with the quotidian hopes and realities from their own positions as influential religious leaders in their respective Muslim, Jewish, and Christian traditions. I only hope the Symposium was a launch for many more conversations on this topic in even more depth and in a variety of forums to further push the boundaries of both academic and practitioner discourses.

Over the past several years, my parents and I have been tremendous supporters and students of Sh. Yasir Qadhi. When I first heard about this inaugural symposium, I reserved seats for my parents and myself seven weeks in advance. Sh. Yasir Qadhi’s presence brought over 100 Muslim students from over 11 institutions of higher learning to the symposium because of the serious and relevant nature of this topic to Muslims everywhere, and I understand that Imam Suhaib Webb, one of the foremost scholars and Imam of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, watched the symposium via the online video stream.
